Four places near Pune to visit this December

The winter is on. The temperature is low and the mornings are misty. This is a great time to visit places which are usually not on the radar during the monsoons. Here are 4 trips which you should make in the next 2 months.

Flamingos at Bhigwan

The backwaters at Bhigwan
This IS the season to go to Bhigwan. Thousands of migratory birds come to the catchment area of Ujjani dam during winter when the water recedes a bit. The most famous attraction are the flamingos. Leave early, go on a boat and watch these beautiful birds in their full splendour. For more details including route maps, photos of birds and details of the guide/boatman, read my trip report here.

Vandalized Idols at Bhuleshwar Temple

Bhuleshwar Temple
There’s something about this temple which makes it very charming. The history, the serene surroundings and the many unique things in this temple make it a worthy visit any time. Try to go there early in the morning or late evening and you will be rewarded with a sense of calmness you don’t get in the city. If you can, then try to catch the sunrise from the temple (it is not far away from Pune). For more details, check here and here.

Diveagar Beach
What? A beach in winter? Yes! The crowds are lesser, the rooms are cheaper and the oxygen is purer! A clean beach and a clear sky make for a wonderful combination. The chillness in the air and the warm water from the morning sun makes it a wonderful experience. Try it and you will keep going back every year. See photos and details from my trips to diveagar here and here.

Parvati Temple Pune View from the top

Pune City from Parvati Hill

Parvati Temple
A brisk but short climb will take you to one of the highest points in Pune city. Go before dawn and watch the sun rise over Pune city. Try a time lapse video! The morning mist will guarantee a great sight. More details here.
